rating Great little box

I've been using the WD TV player for 6 months now and I like it a lot. Small, easy to use, plays anything I've ever wanted it to play. It just works. I'd buy another one tomorrow if anything would happen to this one today! Or wait, having said that I probably would consider Western Digital WD TV Live Network-ready HD Media Player WDBAAN0000NBK-NESN, it's basically the same device with an ethernet port so it's able to play networked / internet content.

rating Need external hard drive to use this media player.

I didn't realize you need to use an external hard drive with this media player. Since I do have one, I hooked it up to view my photos. The one thing that is really irritating, is that it is so slow moving from one photo to the next. I checked the settings and on the slide show settings, the fastest rate is 3 seconds. If I don't use the slide show settings, I cannot just click and advance to the next photo. It takes around 5 seconds or more to move on. The online manual did not offer any help in this area. I didn't take the time to call and ask for technical support, but I may try when I have the time.

I`ve been using WD Box for the last 10 Months. So far, its going superb! Thanks for such a great service Amazon!

rating FF/REW Issues

I loved this when I got it a year ago. But I've run into a problem I haven't found a way around yet. Shows record fine, but if when watching the show, I try to Fast Forward or Rewind, it jumps incomprehensibly. So if you can watch a show without FF or REW, this is the thing for you; if not, beware. I was using MP4's.....

rating Western Digital media player

This product works great for me. The only problem is the remote. If it is lost or damaged the media player is useless.

rating Do not waste your money

Bought this media center and after I got it I was completely frustrated with its poor functionality - no video preview mode, wireless didn't work in spite of a note it should to, movies names were too big to fit under small icons - not able to identify what movie is until run it.
Also, the price is too high for this center - instead of this, for only $104 I bought Bright*View Cinematube with wireless USB device - had no any problems at all.

rating This was an okay product, could have been better.

This was an okay product, not much codec support and the remote control really has no functionality. Picture and audio is great though and it's easy to use.

rating Handy little device

*Update 7/7/10 - Hooked up a 1TB Iomega drive. I don't understand why everyone is complaining about the index speed, by the time I got to the couch and turned on the tv, the entire drive was already indexed. So far, I've only had one instance where I had to unplug the reader and plug it back in to "reset" things. My tv refused to acknowledge the device until I did that. Not sure if it was the tv or the reader that caused the issue, but unplugging the reader for a second solved the problem.

*Update 6/7/10 - I recently hooked up a 250GB drive and it's been doing great. I saw other people complain of how long it takes to index larger drives but I think they're not taking into account that this is a USB connection, if you hook up a 1TB drive to anything via USB, it's going to take awhile. It indexed my 250GB drive very quickly.

I've been converting our families DVD collections to avi files to save space. Trying to hook up the netbook to my parent's tv for them (and speakers, etc) every time they wanted to watch something was a pain, not to mention the tangle of wires. This little toy is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I just move whatever video files they want from the hard drive (where the collection is stored) to a jump drive. That way all they have to do is plug the jump drive into the back of this and presto, they're watching stuff w/o the hassle. When I compare $$$ v/s hassle factor (of dealing with parents' tech deficiencies), this is worth every penny! In fact, I just went ahead and gave my parents the one I bought and ordered a second one for myself.

CONS: No instructions whatsoever included (hook up, user guide) but my parents were able to figure out the simple menu w/o it, so no biggie. You cannot power on/off or anything else w/o a remote. (When I have time, I plan to see if I can program into my universal remote in case I misplace the remote that came with it.)

I've only used it with AVI files and I haven't tried hooking up a large external drive to it yet (which will make things even simpler if it works as advertised), I also haven't used it with 1080p files. I'd love to eventually have a wireless system as well as stream live video, but this will do me fine until the industry gets around to standardizing media players.

I've only had it a week so I'll update as I try new things (external hard drives, 1080p, etc).

rating Great Little Black Box

I bought this at a steal for 44$ on eBay, and love it. This supports all the video I use like mkv. and allows subtitles(which is great for the Spanish speaking people in my home). Just connect your hdmi cable(sold separately), and hard drive(wd recommends theirs but doesn't matter) and the ac and your done with the setup. Once on the menu looks great(if you use HD, worthless with the included composite), video looks great and plays smoothly, pictures look great, great music player too(includes album art). Just one bad thing, that I don't think affects many people is, when viewing ass. or ssa. sub files, if the subber put subs on the top they come down and mix with the bottom ones, and does not support fonts, so it converts the subs to regular srt.(dvd kinds). All in all great product, I would have paid way more for it, great little box with enough memory(go for the live to use with a network).Western Digital WD TV Live Network-ready HD Media Player WDBAAN0000NBK-NESN
